While this Radical Inclusion clause exists to encourage diversity, the event has been widely criticized for the lack of it. In a 2014 survey, some shocking statistics were revealed. The attendees of the festival were made up of 87% white people with the remaining percentage being split 6% each for Latino and Asian festival-goers and a shocking 1% of black folk. Larry Harvey stated at one point that “I don’t think black folks like to camp as much as white folks… We’re not going to set racial quotas… This has never been imagined by us as a utopian society ”.

The festival location is not one that is considered comfortable by any means, it is in the desert after all. Given the setup Burners are expected to bring any special accommodations they might need along – it’s impossible to cater for specific dietary requirements or medication for so many different people. While most commodities can be traded among your fellow Burners, some items are not permitted because liability can become a serious matter if something goes wrong.
