A Seasonal Ritual

In the summer of 1986, somewhere on a beach in San Francisco, a man built a 9-foot wooden sculpture of a man only to burn it.  That man was Larry Harvey and for he and his friends this developed into a yearly event. As the years went by the number of people grew and so did the sculpture. What started out as 9 feet in 1986 grew to 15 feet in 1987, and two years later it was three times taller!

Another of the core tenets of the Burning Man Festival is “Leave No Trace”. After the festival, there shouldn’t be any trash to be seen! Unfortunately, this rule has been disregarded in recent years and the festival has drawn criticism from organizations like Sierra Club who are all about protecting the environment. Accusations of discarding astronomical numbers of water bottles as well as dumping trash around San Francisco have been levied by the organization and local residents alike
