Tom Hanks - Type 2 Diabetes
"The doctor said, 'You know those high blood sugar numbers you've been dealing with since you were 36?'" Tom Hanks told David Letterman on The Late Show in 2013. You've graduated! Young man, you have type 2 diabetes." The double Oscar winner cheerfully said "Something's going to kill us all." Hanks said his doctor told him he could cure himself if he returned to his high school weight. Hanks informed Letterman that he would have to accept diabetes. The reason? "I weighed 96 pounds [in high school, and] most of that was that big white Afro that I wore back in the '70s!"

Selena Gomez - Lupus
The body can be cruel towards itself. Lupus attacks itself, destroying healthy tissues. From 2012 to 2014, Selena Gomez had lupus, which attacked her kidneys and required a transplant. She initially ignored what was happening. "Maybe I wasn't good at knowing what that meant," the singer admitted. "So it became life-or-death." After months of hiding, Gomez revealed on Instagram that one of her best friends had donated her a kidney. “I am doing fairly well now," she remarked at the Lupus Research Alliance Breaking Through Gala in New York.
