A Big Mess

She had never felt so terrible in her life. Never gone through anything close to this. She was embarrassed and ashamed. What happened with her crush made it all the more worse. Absolutely everyone was staring. The school nurses called for assistance. The vice-principal hurried to call her parents. The school had never dealt with something on this scale before. It’s a lot to take in, but this is a complicated story. So what happened?

A Carefree Life

Hannah Combs was a resident of Harker Heights, in Texas. The town was a small one. The kind of town where everyone knows everyone, and everyone is neighborly. Hannah was unusual in that she was actually excited to be starting school after a long summer vacation. She had been warned that her new school had a reputation for bullying, but she wasn’t worried. She was socially outgoing, and many of her friends would be there.

The Opposite Sex

Hannah had one thing on her mind lately, and it wasn’t books. It was boys. They were all she could think about. She’d heard all about high school and was excited about her first kiss. She knew how teen boys could be though. They’d surely pick her about, and find something wrong with her. She remembered hearing a story about a girl who was ruthlessly bullied because she had lice. She decided she needed planning.

A New Look

Hannah decided that she wanted to turn heads and make a splash when she arrived on her first day. She evaluated herself and decided that her hair was the only part of herself that she liked. After marathoning Marylin Monroe movies during her holiday, Hannah decided that she wanted to get blonde highlights. The stylist liked the idea, and also took the chance to warn her about a lice outbreak that was ongoing in school.

Getting Ready

Hannah couldn’t stop admiring her hair. The start of school was only a week away and she couldn’t be happier. Her best friend Betsy said she looked fantastic. She knew the boys weren’t prepared for her. She had taken the time to plan every outfit she’d wear. With her all-new look, she knew that she’d be the talk of the school. She truly believed that nothing could derail her first week at her new school.

The Beginning

Thankfully, the first two weeks at her new school went by without a hitch, but she didn’t get much notice from any of the teen boys. High school turned out to be mostly just school work, and nothing like the films. During lunch breaks, Betsy and Hannah would spy out the boys. They thought that perhaps it was too early for anything like that. Everyone was just getting settled in and acclimating, after all.

Male Alert

There was an afternoon, after school. Betsy and Hannah were just talking when a sly-looking teen came up behind Hannah and mussed her hair. He arrogantly shouted, “Love the new look, you loser!” Hannah couldn’t understand why anyone would do such a thing. Hannah could feel herself about to cry, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to simply stop it. She didn’t know why someone would be so terribly mean to her like that.

Not So Pretty Anymore

All the other kids were staring at Hannah. Hannah wondered if her hair had been that badly messed up. She had gone to some much trouble, and now this happen. Betsy looked horrified and told Hannah she had to go to the school nurse immediately. Hannah felt a strange sensation on the top of her head and wondered what was happening. Betsy helped her to the nurse and told her not to touch her head.

When Hannah arrived at the sick bay, she was at a loss for what was happening. The nurse gently sat her down and said everything would be okay. Hannah was scared now. The nurse told Betsy to fetch the principal. When he arrived he looked concerned but remained calm and said he would contact her parents. He was worried, but he managed to hide it well. He had never seen anything quite like this before.

A Red Haze

Hannah’s dad Christian, rushed to the school as fast as he could. When he beheld his crying daughter, his vision blurred over with a crimson haze. He couldn’t believe this was happening. He had served in the military, and so he was a man of action. Someone was responsible for this, and they were going to pay. He knew he had to get to the bottom of this and to do it fast at that.

A Quick Rush

Christian wanted to know what was happening, but Hannah was so upset she couldn’t even speak properly. She wasn’t just upset about her hair, she was also upset that all of this started because she was so obsessed with getting a boyfriend that she went to all the trouble to change her hair. She realized she should have known that the teenage boys would be immature about everything and that it wasn’t really worth it.

Furious

Christian became more and more furious as the situation went on. He began to scream. He wanted to know who did this, and why an ambulance hadn’t been called yet. Christian threatened to call the police, but the school principal’s secretary told him to calm down. Christian looked at her in anger and decided that now it was war. Christian was a hot head and was never one to talk things out calmly and reasonably.

Speaking Out

After Christian had taken his daughter to the hospital, he decided to go public with what happened. It was crazy to him that the school had refused to take disciplinary action against the bully. He ordered the Killeen Independent School Police put together an assault case. Soon, more heard about the story, and they began to demand further action. The bully was no longer coming to school, but what happened to Hannah. Was she okay?

A Flaming Fury

In the emergency ward, a doctor examined Hannah and found that she had first-degree chemical burns on her skin from a strong glue the boy had poured on her. Hannah was in immense pain. Her hair, which had cost a lot of money, was ruined, and she was embarrassed, as teenagers tend to be. Thanks to a stupid kid. Hannah was about to discover that it didn’t end there, as far as he was concerned.

Shedding The Hair

Hannah shaved part of her head, but she was having a hard time accepting that she was about to lose her favorite feature. She figured she’d try and make the best of it. A month later, although her head had mostly healed, she still felt a tingling sensation on her head. She guessed it was just the skin healing. She decided to book an appointment with her stylist to see if they could salvage anything.

“No!”

The hairstylist began to examine Hannah’s hair, and comb it. Hannah hadn’t been able to do this for weeks. When the hairdresser began, the strange sensation got worse. Hannah shouted “NO! Stop!” The stylist calmed her down so she could take a closer look. She knew Hannah had suffered, and wanted to help her. She combed through her hair very carefully while taking a look, then all of a sudden, she screamed. She was shocked.

They’re Absolutely Everywhere

“Oh my goodness!” screamed the stylist. Hannah’s scalp was full of lice. Hannah was mortified by the discovery. She was embarrassed, and what was worse was that the moment had been caught on the CCTV cameras, She hoped the hairdresser wouldn’t show anyone. Hannah begged the hairdresser not to let anyone know. It turns out that the bully had transferred the lice onto Hannah’s head. It appears the bully really wanted to ruin Hannah’s life.

Outbreak

It had taken a while for the lice to actually hatch, which explained the strange feeling that had overcome Hannah for the past few weeks. It wasn’t her skin healing, it was the lice festering and growing. The stylist would need to treat the scalp to kill all of the lice. It wouldn’t be that easy. It turns out that growth in the burnt skin had mutated the lice and made it resistant to chemicals.

One Option

It turned out that because of Hannah’s burns, they couldn’t treat her head with the medicine needed to kill the lice. They’d have to wait for her head to heal first. To do anything else would risk more harm. Therefore there was only one option, and that was for Hannah to just live with the lice. Hannah was upset, but more than anything, she wanted justice. She wanted the boy who did this to pay.

Anger

After a while, when her skin had healed more, Hannah went back to the hairstylist. She wanted to dye her hair red, because she liked the color, but also because she wanted to represent the fury she felt about the whole situation. She was planning to get justice, and that justice would involve the bullying getting his comeuppance. It wouldn’t be easy, but she had been shown kindness by the town, and they supported her.

Seeking Justice

Hannah wasn’t just in this for herself, she wanted to make the world a better place for all kids out there who were suffering from bullying. She believed bullies should be held accountable, and justice should be served. Her parents helped her start a Facebook page called “Justice For Hannah”, to bring attention to the dangers of bullying. For far too long, bullying has been a problem at schools, and so Hannah was fighting back.

Gathering Support

Hannah started by sharing all the details of what had happened to her. She emphasized the fact that the school did absolutely nothing to help. Over the next month, the page began gathering support. Through the page, she managed to get enough signatures on a petition to force a public apology from the bully. It also called for the paying of her medical bills, and for him to be temporarily suspended from the high school.

Changing Things For The Better

When interviewed about the page, Hannah explained that she wanted to change things for the better. She spoke about how many suffered from bullying, and she wanted them to stand up for themselves, and if they needed her support, she’d provide it. She said that although she’s just a normal kid, she had very strong feelings about bullying because of the ordeals she’s had to suffer through. She hoped she could help end it forever.

He Would Fail

That terrible teenage boy had ruined Hannah’s best feature and rubbed salt in the wound by giving her lice, but Hannah resolved to not let it affect her. She vowed he would fail. Hannah spoke on her page about how bullying is wrong, but sometimes the bully does it because they’re suffering too. She said that some bullies were bullied themselves, and they needed to be shown a better way. Sometimes they needed help too.

The Response

While some thought Hannah should change schools, Christian had other ideas. He believed that the bully should be sent to a different school. He asked why his daughter should have to uproot her life when she was the victim of this situation. He argued that the bully had given up his right to attend the school when he had harmed Hannah. The school board began to pay attention. They knew they would have to act.

A Revelation

The bully issued a public apology in front of the entire school. He admitted that he did it because he actually liked her, and didn’t know how else to get her attention. Hand said that if that’s the way he expresses himself, then he needs to do a lot of maturing. The school erupted in applause as Hannah boldly walked away from the stage. Hannah had won her final victory. Hannah had gotten her justice.
