“I could only gaze, hoping that my mute desperation would somehow find its way to the surface.” Every day, Martin attempted to communicate with his family to let them know he was still alive, but his attempts seem to be in vain.

In spite of the fact that Martin was unable to enhance his physical talents, he made a concentrated effort to maintain his cognitive abilities. By inventing and solving all kinds of problems in his thoughts, he kept himself engaged and out of trouble.
