A temple is built for this purpose and Burners who have lost loved ones can grieve at the temple and write letters that will be left in the temple to be burned at the end of the festival. It is a touching ritual and many people choose to spread the ashes of the departed at the site.

More Than Merely Tree Huggers
Remember that inclusion clause? You won’t find just hippies at Burning Man. Even the rich and famous can be found at the desert festival, escaping their busy lives. Their camps are luxurious and can be identified by the RVs, specially built beds and air conditioning. Some of them go so far as to bring personal staff such as bodyguards and chefs! There’s nothing like the comforts of home right? They are quite exclusive though and don’t really mix with the other participants.
