Martin was going through one of the most difficult periods of his life, and Barney was the last nail in the coffin of his aspirations of ever finding happiness.

In the words of the author, “you don’t pay them any regard at all.” You are nothing more than a figment of someone’s imagination. Using his own words, he describes it as “an very dismal place to be” because “you are allowing yourself to be eaten by the passage of time.”

At least for the time being, I can’t tolerate watching Barney…. “I guess you could say that Barney had an unpleasant role in my life,” he said at the end of the interview.

Throughout the years, I would have flashbacks and nightmares about what had transpired. Even though Martin’s condition had a significant influence on all of his family members, his mother was the one who suffered the most as a consequence of his illness.
