His greatest worry was that he would one day die in his room by himself, alone and without anybody to care for him. I was still a child at the end of the day, after all. "And what child wouldn't want to spend time with their mum and father?" he said rhetorically.

Since she had been taught to do so, Martin's aromatherapist, Virna van der Walt, was the first to observe his nods, smiles, and gazes when they occurred. For him, it was clear that Martin was understanding what he was saying to him at that moment.

When Martin's health started to deteriorate, he was forced to drop out of school when he was 12 years old. "Obtaining a degree was never something I could have imagined myself completing," he adds, adding that he had been out of school since then.

Martin had to prepare a statement explaining why he wanted to pursue a degree in Computer Science in order to be accepted into the program. His amazement at learning that he had been accepted came shortly after sending in his letter of application.

Martin was even able to meet some new acquaintances while at the campus. In spite of the fact that he is naturally timid and introverted, he says he "learned a great deal and evolved enormously as a person" during his time in the military.

Martin worked part-time in addition to his full-time education, which required him to travel five hours each way every day. In addition, he had to re-learn the fundamentals of mathematics, which had been deleted from his memory.

Martin, on the other hand, did not stop there. It was his next objective to get his driving license. As a result, it took him some time to locate a mentor who was able to teach him how to drive an adapted automobile. "In the meanwhile, I prepared for my theory test and passed it the first time," he remembers proudly.

Martin passed his driving test in October 2013, which allowed him to develop more confidence in his driving ability. "I drive all over the nation, which has assisted me in growing my computer consulting company and providing me with a level of independence that was previously unfathomable to me," he said.

In fact, what Joanna believed as food poisoning was actually pregnancy. She decided to take a pregnancy test to be sure, and the results confirmed she was expecting a child. Martin was ecstatic when she shared her news with him.
