With only 31% of Alabamians managing to stay within the recommended BMI, the state’s 36.3% obesity rate is hardly surprising. Another interesting 31% figure pertains to the number of Alabamians that did not engage in anything active for an entire month.

You only need to visit the Iowa State Fair to understand why this Southern state suffers from such a high obesity rate. At this otherwise jolly festival, you will find over-the-top creations like chicken wings wrapped in bacon, a pecan pie dunked in caramel, large balls of pure bacon, and a variety of milkshakes produced by blending entire cakes with ice cream. This celebration of clogged arteries is a microcosm of the Iowan culture, one that needs a radical overhaul.
