It becomes clear at this point that she had to face many of the coming challenges alone. Having no partner offering help or support, she met a future of uncertainty, driven only by the desire for a better life for her child. One can then understand why Courtney was forced to work so hard when more privileged expecting women would be able to rest and put their feet up. It was Courtney and her baby against the world.

The Officer
Coming back to the unknown police officer, Courtney couldn’t quite place it, but she instinctively felt that there was something different about him. She obviously hadn’t seen him before, and wouldn’t be able to recognize him in a crowd, but there was an aspect of his oddity that really stood out. After all, it was mostly officers from the local precinct that frequented the diner. That fact on its own was not the only reason for her curiosity, though.
